How Are Music Therapists Trained?

In the United States Music Therapists must first complete an approved degree program  bachelor's minimum, at the university level. Music Therapy course requirements emphasize music performance, music history, theory, methods classes, psychology, medical/healthcare learning (such as anatomy & physiology), hands on practicums working in various populations, and completion of a 1200 hour Music Therapy supervised internship.  Once graduated, the Music Therapist is eligible to sit for the national board exam, granting Board Certification status, and earning the status MT-BC.  Maintaining MT-BC requires 100 hours of Continuing Education per 5 year cycle.

State licensure or registration is only available in some states.
